Coconut Water – what’s the benefits?

I have always been a good student. As such, I sat quietly, minded my manners and always listened to my teachers. So when my wonderful Yoga Teacher said to drink coconut water over regular water, I immediately went to the store and got this bad boy!

The Details

I was instantly impressed with the panel and the obviously simple ingredients:

INGREDIENTS: 100% Natural Coconut Water

Being a panel reader, I grabbed a cold one to go and a few to stock in my fridge. (I also loved that they were plastic free!)

Now the education on coconut water

As I was gulping this sweet refreshing beverage, I realized I had no clue why I was drinking it? Sure it tasted fabulous, hydrating and quite refreshing, but I didn’t know the actual benefits. Because of the good student that I am, I did my research!

First up: Instagram and Facebook

So it appears that my friends all agreed that it was the electrolytes and the hydration that was the reason. Makes sense!

Web MD toted “low in calories, naturally fat and cholesterol free, more potassium than four bananas, and super hydrating.” “It contains easily digested carbohydrate in the form of sugar and electrolytes.” I guess my friends do know what they are talking about!

My complaint with Web MD is that they go on to talk about hydration being important, “whether you choose a sports drink, coconut water, or plain water, they all work to keep your body hydrated.” I’m not a fan of the sugary “sport drinks” and believe that people are relying on the taste rather than they negative affect sugars have on your body. I like the idea of hydrating from natural sources.

In addition to Web MD, I went on to one more resource. Dr. Axe goes into the nutrition facts. Coconut water contains approximately 46 calories per cup, 10 grams of natural sugar, with little protein and fat free. The primary nutrient in coconut water is potassium making it a high electrolyte beverage. Yay!! Friends were right again!

Electrolytes are critical to maintain blood volume, heart health, and well as to prevent dehydration. Maintaining electrolyte levels can help reduce fatigue, stress, and help maintain muscle relaxation. (Dr. Axe article)

According to the same article, other health benefits of coconut water include:

  • Lowered blood pressure
  • Weight loss
  • Increased athletic performance
  • Boosted energy
  • Lowered cholesterol
  • Reduced cellulite
  • Relax muscle tension
My conclusion

In conclusion, I found that the most important thing is staying hydrated. If any of you have suffered from dehydration, you know this personally! (I’m raising my hand here!!)

Electrolytes are important to make sure we are keeping the electrical charges in our bodies work properly (electrolytes). So if coconut water is going to be a source of this important function, I’m going to continue to partake.

Unfortunately, it still appears that research of coconut water is still ongoing. From the articles I’ve read, the research that was done was comparing it to sports drinks and plain water. I can’t bring myself to consume the artificial sugars that come in those sports drinks. Therefore, for me personally…I’m going to test out this coconut water a bit more and keep ya’ll updated on my personal opinion!

Is meditation the latest trend?

As I took a quick survey about why people don’t meditate, it got my mind wondering…are people viewing meditation simply as the latest trend; one more thing that we HAVE to do? If we don’t do it “correct” then we won’t get anything out of it?

Is meditation trendy?Then I ran across this article and wondered if rather than meditation being trendy, maybe it’s more that we are band-aiding the mindless society we have created? Are these trendy pop-up boutiques the answer or does it make more sense to teach the basics as well as the benefits of meditation…those that date back to ancient times.

So what does it mean to meditate?

We talked briefly about it over yonder but we can also get Wikipedia’s take:

Meditation is a practice where an individual operates or trains the mind or induces a mode of consciousness, either to realize some benefit or for the mind to simply acknowledge its content without becoming identified with that content, or as an end in itself.

What does that mean? Let’s get more simple:

It is simply:

  • being present in the moment
  • being present with your mind
  • being present with your thoughts
  • being present with your environment

All of the above without judgement. It is not something you do, it is something that you are. So think about this? If you taught yourself to be present in your daily actions, can you see the decrease in stress, anxiety, pain? It’s not about being present 100%, it’s about practicing being present so we are calm when it’s needed.

Am I against these businesses mentioned above? Absolutely not! I think it’s a great way to bring people together and give people the tools to develop their own practice. I also believe in the power of group meditation and the expansive energy it creates. I do, however, worry that it’s creating a co-dependent environment where people think that they have to go somewhere to DO meditation.

Use these facilities as a tool, just as you would a guided meditation on the internet, but continue to develop your own way of being through practice. Remember, meditation isn’t about physically doing something…it is about being in the moment.


Soda – how is this affecting you?

Did you see the 39 lbs???

Drinking one can of this sugar beverage a day equates to consuming 39 pounds of sugar per year. Would you sit in front of 39 bags of sugar and just spoon it in? I would hope you would say no! Consuming it in liquid form makes it so much easier I suppose and hence why we have a problem in our society today.  Let’s break it down:How does soda affect you?


Regularly consuming sugary drinks interacts with the gene that affects weight.


Having too much sugar in your diet reduces production of a brain chemical that helps us learn, store memories and process insulin. We are literally dulling our brain’s mechanism that tells you enough is enough!


The high levels of phosphoric acis in colas have been linked to kidney stones and other renal problems. Think you’re clear with those diet sodas? Think again! Diet drinks are increased with a two-fold risk, especially that diet soda drinkers typically consume more per day.

Digestive System:

Carbonation can cause gas, bloating, and cramping. Caffeine can also worsen episodes of diarrhea or contribute to constipation.


Soda consumption has been linked to osteoporosis and bone density loss, likely due to the phosphoric acid and caffeine found in soda. Link to WebMD

Is that quick fix of bubbles and sugar really worth the risks?

Why Detoxify?

Let’s be honest, we use and abuse our body! We live in a fast paced society with a convenience store at every corner where you can quickly grab some junk, both food and drink, and be on your way. Add a mostly sedentary life with little or no exercise and we’ve got a recipe for disaster on our bodies!

So why detoxify and how does it help you? Here’s the best analogy that makes it so simple to understand.


Our body is like a bathtub, the water faucet (brings toxins in); and the drain (lets the toxins out). When it is running at a normal pace, we don’t have as much of a problem. When we are in overload and the drain is plugged, the tub gradually fills up and spills over the sides. This is when people get SICK and you are given a MOP (medicine) which can add more toxins & have side effects. 

We believe most people want to lose weight and feel good but they don’t REALLY understand how to achieve true health & vitality. Toxins are what lock up the fat cells! To have effective weight loss, we have to unplug the drain (detox) by nutritionally cleansing. When you get rid of the toxins the FAT CAN MELT AWAY!

SIMPLY PUT… Toxins come from stressors like emotional distress, the environment, processed foods, extra weight and being inactive. Stress leads to toxic build up which leads to inflammation which leads to the disease process.

Decreasing stressors/toxins will decrease inflammation which will decrease the disease breeding ground…creating HEALTH! Eliminate these toxins and clean the drain!

Then What?

Continue to monitor the intake of your foods and drinks. You’ve done the hard work, now limit the toxic foods that go back into your body.  Focus on healthier, earth foods, those that serve your body. Drink lots of water! Get out and move!

Mindfulness versus Meditation

This is definitely a question that is commonly asked and quite frankly interchanged often in our culture. I know I have been guilty of this as well!

Let’s break it down simply…because I’m all about simple!


Being mindful is simply taking a moment to acknowledge and appreciate where you are in a particular moment. It’s about observing your breath, observing your surroundings, observing your body, and the hardest one – observing your thoughts, particularly without judgment. Mindfulness is the first initial step in working toward your own personal meditation practice.


Meditation is the state of being, an intentional practice that focuses inwardly to one’s mind and spirit. The Buddhist Center refers to it as, “a means to transforming the mind.” People often confuse meditation with an actual act, something that you do; however, that is not correct. Over time, your meditation practice will develop effortlessly and you will find that the activities that you do throughout the day will now be done with more ease and awareness.

Both mindfulness and meditation allows us to get off auto-pilot living and create a more intentional, grounded life. Begin with simple mindfulness of a mundane act. Be fully present in the act discouraging all distractions. Then, take the next step into meditation and practice simply being in the moment.
